Summer Reading

"It will motivate young people who feel that they have come to the end of possibility, encourage those who need a boost and blend perfectly with others who feel they are on the right path."

Dear Students and Parents,

In an effort to support academic performance, a lifelong love of reading, and a community connection, Freedom High School proudly announces the "2007 One Book, One Freedom Community" required summer reading title, We Beat the Street: How A Friendship Pact Led to Success by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt with Sharon M. Draper. In this true story, the three doctors share how they found the strength and determination through their difficulties to complete high school, college, and medical school together.

Every student in the school will be required to read We Beat the Street. This is in addition to any summer reading assignment for specific programs or classes. A school-wide multiple-choice exam and writing prompt will be given to every student at the same time within the first few weeks of school.

Freedom High School's summer reading program forms an essential component of our school literacy plan and supports our learning community. We encourage you to enjoy this book over the summer. A limited number of copies will be sold in the Media Center for $5.00 during the last weeks of school. Copies may also be checked out from the school library, but are due back in the normal time; due to high demand, the copies will not be renewed over the summer months. Check your local bookstores and public libraries for availability. The book is widely available in paperback with the ISBN: 0142406279.

Sincerely,

Mark Brown
